The Caller

The vital ingredient!

The caller selects the dances, organises the dancing, encourages the guests to participate - and generally acts as a master of ceremonies during the musical part of the evening. The dancing gives the guests a chance to meet each other naturally during the course of the evening, especially during the progressive dances. The dancing is pitched at the level of the dancers, and can last for as long or short a duration as you wish.

The First Dance

It is quite common for the newly-wed couple to lead the first dance - which is a nice start to their married life. Traditionally the first dance was often a waltz which other members of the wedding party would join as the dance progressed. However, now-a-days the newly-weds will often lead a set dance with the other members of the wedding party (i.e. parents of the bride and groom, best man, maid of honour etc) making up the lead set which could be seen as symbolising the two families coming together. Indeed, some callers even have specific wedding dances that can help break the ice and encourage the rest of the wedding party to participate.

Selecting a Caller

Although callers tend to work as freelancers, and are not usually tied to a particular band, each band will usually have a list of callers with whom they work who can fulfil your specific needs. Once you've slected the band you would like to perform at your event then discuss with them any specific requirements you may have. Factors like the level of experience of your guests, whether you want a particular feel to the dancing (say Scottish or Irish dances) and any particular needs, or requirments for your event (say a large number of children or inclusion of disabled dancers). If you specify your requirments in advance then an experienced, professional band (or agent) will select a caller who will be ideally suited to your audience.
